$20 Billion Intel Chip Plant In Ohio: Hopes for Safely Building a Bright Future
Intel’s $20 billion chip manufacturing plant in New Albany, Ohio, initially slated for completion by 2025, faces delays due to various demands and business conditions. Groundbreaking took place in September 2022, with Intel aiming for production to begin by 2026, extending the timeline by 1 year. Intel clarified that despite not meeting their initial production goal, construction has been ongoing since late 2022, and they remain committed to the project. Construction timelines for such facilities typically range from 3 to 5 years, depending on various factors. Despite current delays, excitement abounds over this potentially transformative project.
The project, Ohio’s largest private sector investment, is located just outside of Columbus. Intel has employed over 100 Ohioans and expects to hire thousands more as construction progresses. Notably, more than 1.6 million work hours have been dedicated to the project, with significant concrete pouring and infrastructure installations.
While Intel hasn’t set a new completion date, sources suggest a finish by late 2026. The plant, once operational, will employ around 3,000 people with an average salary of $135,000. Intel’s plans to start operations by 2025 hinge on market conditions and federal aid from the CHIPS Act, which offers semiconductor manufacturing grants and tax credits.
To secure the project, Ohio provided approximately $2 billion in incentives, including grants and tax breaks tied to job creation. Intel’s revised timeline aligns with the deadline set by Ohio for incentives, ensuring compliance with the terms of their agreement.
